Well kids, take out a sheet of paper and a pencil, because your going to be drawing today.  If you're like the many adults out there, you probably don't know how to do math, but since your in college your probably a little smarter than the average Peter Griffin/Homer Simpson.  Let's hope your smarter than Peter, because that guy, yeah, he's different.

You just took your midterm and you happen to get your score.  It came out to 50/80.  Your midterm is worth 30% of your grade.  It's like halfway your semester and you want to know if you can still get an A in the class.  Or, you could just cry in a corner.

The next thing you need to figure out is the point distribution of your grades in the class.  Let's say Homework is 20% and your Final is 50%.  Let's do some math now.

  • Homework 20%  Let's say your doing about 90/100 on all your assignments
    • You should be able to figure your homework score out.  Let's say you had 10 assignments (all 10 points each) and you added up all the points and it came out to 90 out of the possible 100.
  • Midterm 30% Well, you got 50/80
  • Final 50% Will leave this as a variable x, since you haven't figured it out yet.
  • An A in the class is usually a 92% and up.

Convert Scores in section into a Percentage

  • Convert your Homework score into a percent (90/100)*(100%) = 90%
  • Convert your Midterm score into a percent (50/80)*(100%) = 62.5%

Imagine that your grade is based on a 100 point scale, where Homework is 20 points, Midterm is 30 points, and Final is 50 points.  Those values are the max points you can get in each section.

Determine your point count

  • Homework - Take 90% of 20 points (.90)*(20) = 18 points/20points
  • Midterm - Take 62.5% of 30 points (.625)*(30) = 18.75 points/30points

Determine if you can still get an A

  • Homework (18points) + Midterm (18.75points ) + Final (50points) = 86.75 points / 100 points

The highest score you can get even if you aced the final, is an 86.75% or in English, a B.

  1. Hopefully your class is curved.
  2. Talk to the professor about extra credit (^__~)
  3. Study harder for your test next time.  Usually you want to still have hope.
